Announcements and Important Events
Over the recent break Holt Mason Dansville Varsity Gymnastics coach Jaime Kline challenged her gymnasts to read All American Boys by Jason Reynolds and Brendan Kiely. The novel focuses on an event that forever changes the lives of two teens, one black and one white. It parallels events that are currently taking place around the world. After reading the book it was the athlete’s responsibility to speak with a person of color to discuss life experiences, racism, and how the world could be a better place for people of all color.
This was an eye-opening learning experience for our students. They learned that they need to “embrace your differences and recognize the differences in others.” Another community member said “I think if everyone is just more accepting of everyone instead of placing early judgement…it would just be so much better.” It was said that students should “use your voice” to make a change in the world, “just bring attention to it because people of colors lives are more important than your comfort.” These are all life lessons that were presented to our athletes from their community through an assignment based on a current event.
Coaches take current events and turn them into personal growth exercises for the next generation. Kline saw a “book club” as an opportunity to foster mental growth in her gymnasts. Through reading, self-reflection, and discussion they were able to sort through thoughts and feelings that many were struggling with. The lessons learned from this assignment will stay with our students for their entire lives.
Coaches in the Holt Athletic Community strive to foster growth in students beyond skill in their chosen sport. They spend time tutoring to assist with academic progress and time listening to concerns to assist with problem solving skills. Our coaches work to challenge students in sport and life.
